About Wind Power in Illinois
Illinois is currently seeing a massive expansion in wind energy development. The state saw its first wind farm constructed in just 2003, but today Illinois is home to over 2500 megawatts of wind generation capacity, enough to power nearly 1,000,000 homes with clean, emissions-free electricity.
Current data show that there is more than 16,000 MW of new wind in some stage of planning in Illinois. While many of those projects will not make it past the planning stage, the state is still likely to see 5000-10,000 MW of installed wind capcity in the coming decades. With those projects will come thousands of new jobs, tax revenue, payments to farmers and other forms of economic development.
Illinois' strengths stem from our strong wind resources, robust transmission, and forward-thinking public policy. Click the links at the left to learn more about why Illinois is a growing market for wind power.
